Red Light Politics: Why I cannot watch Royal Weddings → redlightpolitics.info

redlightpolitics:

Every diamond worn by a Royal; every shred of cloth; every bite of overpriced gourmet food they eat; every blessing from a church member and horse powered carriage remind me of the wealth accumulated on the back of slavery.

Every bit of European Royal related events reminds me of colonialism, death and the most inhumane living conditions inflicted on entire groups of people (should I post the infant mortality rates among Latin American First Nations to illustrate the contemporary effect of Spanish colonialism, perhaps?). And they remind me of the racist legacy that we have to endure to these days.

I cannot separate Royal wealth from how that wealth was made. It’s like a slap in my Third World face.

It hurts me even more when I see people from my country putting each other down either because they loved the wedding it or because they’re criticizing it. We just can’t win, we either see one another as simpletons who adore anything foreign and don’t have any pride in our own culture, or we’re simpletons who should know our place and not feel entitled to criticize something that we can never even aspire to be.

“Since we all came from a women, got our name from a women, and our game from a women. I wonder why we take from women, why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think its time we killed for our women, be real to our women, try to heal our women, cus if we don’t we’ll have a race of babies that will hate the ladies, who make the babies. And since a man can’t make one he has no right to tell a women when and where to create one.” -Tupac Shakur

“Joel: Wednesday, do you think that maybe someday you might want to get married and have kids?
Wednesday: No.
Joel: But what if you met the right man, who worshiped and adored you? Who’d do anything for you? Who’d be your devoted slave? Then what would you do?
Wednesday: I’d pity him.”

“Nope. Zero,” the president said to the speaker. Mr. Boehner tried again. “Nope. Zero,” Mr. Obama repeated. “John, this is it.” A long silence followed, said one participant in the meeting. “It was just like an awkward, ‘O.K., well, what do you do now?’” —

This makes me happy. REMEMBER WHEN THE GOP TRIED TO HOLD WOMEN’S BODIES HOSTAGE AND OUR PRESIDENT WAS LIKE NOPE?

Remember that one time the US elected an awesome president? Let’s try to do that again

“Amy [Poehler] was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can’t remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and ‘unladylike.’
Jimmy Fallon, who was arguably the star of the show at the time, turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, ‘Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it.’
Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. ‘I don’t fucking care if you like it.’ Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. I should make it clear that Jimmy and Amy are very good friends and there was never any real beef between them. (Insert penis joke here.)
With that exchange, a comic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.”

“Greg Jeloudov was 35 and new to America when he decided to join the Army. Like most soldiers, he was driven by both patriotism for his adopted homeland and the pragmatic notion that the military could be a first step in a career that would enable him to provide for his new family. Instead, Jeloudov arrived at Fort Benning, Ga., for basic training in May 2009, in the middle of the economic crisis and rising xenophobia. The soldiers in his unit, responding to his Russian accent and New York City address, called him a “champagne socialist” and a “commie faggot.” He was, he told NEWSWEEK, “in the middle of the viper’s pit.” Less than two weeks after arriving on base, he was gang-raped in the barracks by men who said they were showing him who was in charge of the United States. When he reported the attack to unit commanders, he says they told him, “It must have been your fault. You must have provoked them.” —
